Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago has advocated the need for Officials of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company AEDC to intensify advocacy and community engagement to keep consumers abreast with issues related to power supply to encourage payment of electricity bills.
The Governor stated this when he received officials of the AEDC at the Government House Minna as part of the ongoing discussions with the State Government to improve power supply to residents.
He said, with adequate advocacy and community engagement, customers will be more informed and have better understanding on the need to pay their bills for improved electricity supply.
Governor Umaru Bago also reiterated the need for AEDC to install metres that will indicate the quantum of power supplied to transformers and households respectively.
He said by doing so, the Distribution Company will have a proper record of power consumed and ascertain if it commensurates with what the people are paying for, since it is not possible for every house to be provided with meter, the idea of monitoring the rate of power supplied to houses can help a lot.
The Governor also disclosed that the State Government is willing to augment the payment of electricity bills of customers under low service base tariffs but appealed to AEDC to improve on steady power supply to enable low income earners engage in their respective businesses that need power to thrive.
He urged the AEDC to consider closing the gap between infrastructure for distribution and consumption adding that the State government will monitor developments and subsequently discuss again with the AEDC on ways of intervention and ensure improved power supply.
