The Kaduna water supply project, launched in the 1970s and 1980s, revolutionized water access in Kaduna and its environs. This ambitious initiative brought relief to residents and industries alike, fostering growth and development. International partnerships during the Makarfi administration further bolstered water provision, aligning with the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These collaborative efforts yielded significant improvements in water supply, benefiting Kaduna metropolis and surrounding cities like Zaria, Kafanchan, and Birnin-Gwari.
Despite substantial investments in contracts, including the expansion of Zaria water works, water supply issues persisted. The El-Rufa’i administration faced notable challenges, including the alleged interference of the “Bakan Gizo” spirit in Zaria’s water supply. Urban renewal projects, while aimed at modernizing infrastructure, inadvertently disrupted water distribution networks, leading to widespread pipeline excavations. The Kaduna State Water Board, responsible for managing water resources, faced severe setbacks, including:
– Unpaid worker salaries, demotivating staff and affecting service delivery
– Lack of water purification materials, compromising water quality and safety
– Inefficient water distribution, exacerbating shortages and inconvenience to residents
Governor Uba Sani’s administration marked a significant shift in the Kaduna State Water Board’s fortunes. Key initiatives undertaken by the governor include:
– Paying N800 million in outstanding staff salaries, restoring morale and stability
– Disbursing N400 million for pipeline upgrades and water channeling, enhancing distribution efficiency
– Allocating N300 million for water treatment materials, ensuring safe and clean water supply
These efforts have yielded tangible results, increasing water supply in Kaduna metropolis from a mere 6% to a commendable 28%. Moreover, equipment worth millions of Naira is on its way to further enhance water distribution across all 23 local government areas by December 2025.
As Governor Uba Sani’s administration addresses immediate challenges, it’s essential for the people of Kaduna State to demand accountability for the billions spent on water projects, particularly the Zaria water works. Citizens must scrutinize the Kaduna State Water Board’s operations, ensuring transparency and effective use of funds. This collective effort will be crucial in:
– Sustaining progress and achieving long-term water security
– Enhancing water distribution infrastructure
– Providing clean and safe water to all residents
By working together, Kaduna State can overcome its water challenges and build a brighter future for its citizens.
