Niger State Government has appealed to the Agro Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes, ACReSAL to fast track the stabilization of gully erosion sites in Mokwa Local Government Area.
The Governor made the appeal during a special Dinner held for ACReSAL World Bank team at the Hauwa Wali Mulitipurpose Hall, Government House, Minna.
Farmer Umaru Bago who was represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff and Coordinator of all World Bank projects in the State, Sadiq Yusuf, expressed hope that the stabilization of the gully erosion sites in Mokwa will help in easing the worries of the people who have for long been faced with the environmental hazard.
He reassured them of the State Government’s continuous support in making sure that all World Bank assisted projects succeed in the State.
The task team leader, ACRESAL, Dr. Joy Agene in her remarks, acknowledged that the enabling environment created by the Niger State Government has been instrumental in the success of Acresal projects in the State while also applauding the farmer Governor for his tremendous support to women in the Agricultural sector.
National Project Coordinator, ACReSAL, Dr. Abdulhameed Umar, said the the World Bank’s mission in Niger State afforded them the opportunity to validate and endorse the strategic management plan for the success of ACReSAL project, through which the federal government would invest, to develop 20 strategic catchment management plans.
He said, the management plan will eventually produce another 200 of micro catchment management plans at sub-national levels with Niger State at the forefront.
The Niger State Project Coordinator, ACReSAL, Raji Shehu Adam, appreciated the support from the State Government through prompt payment of counterpart funding which has been pivotal in the implementation of projects in the State.
The Commissioner for Environment, Muhammad Yakubu Kolo, enumerated some achievements of ACReSAL in the State to include the establishment of 150 hectares of oil farm in Laboji, training of 100 women in agriculture, digging of 88 boreholes across the 25 local government areas of the State, and agro poultry activities covering 25 hectares.
Others are the establishment of small plant Nurseries, procurement of tractors and several other farming equipment.
The event featured entertainment by Gwape cultural troupe and the presentation of gifts from the Niger State Government to all task team members from the World Bank.
