A delegation from the Sustainable Power and Irrigation in Nigeria (SPIN) project, led by Aisha Ismail Njidda, Environmental and Social Safeguards Specialist and Consultant for the SPIN project, today paid a courtesy visit to the Secretary to the Niger State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, in his office.
The visit marked a critical step in advancing the proposed SPIN project intervention at the Chanchaga Irrigation Scheme, aimed at enhancing sustainable agriculture and energy access in the state.
During the visit, Ms. Njidda outlined the objectives of the Environmental and Social Screening exercise, emphasizing its role in ensuring compliance with international safeguards standards and mitigating potential risks to communities and ecosystems.
She highlighted the SPIN project’s alignment with Niger State’s broader goals of agricultural revitalization and climate-resilient infrastructure, as championed by Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s administration.
In his response, Alhaji Abubakar Usman reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to partnering with development initiatives that prioritize sustainability and inclusive growth.
The SSG commended the SPIN project for its proactive approach to environmental and social safeguards, noting that such measures are critical to the success of irrigation and power interventions in the State.
“Niger State is open to collaborations that drive progress in line with our agricultural transformation agenda. The SPIN project’s focus on sustainability aligns perfectly with our vision for a greener, more productive future,” Alhaji Usman stated.
He further assured the team of the Government’s full support, including facilitating stakeholder engagement and ensuring community participation throughout the screening process .
The SPIN project team expressed gratitude for the warm reception and pledged to work closely with state authorities and local stakeholders to deliver impactful and socially responsible outcomes. The screening exercise at the Chanchaga Irrigation Scheme is set to commence imminently, with findings expected to guide subsequent project phases.
The Sustainable Power and Irrigation in Nigeria (SPIN) project is a multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at integrating renewable energy and efficient irrigation systems to bolster food security and rural livelihoods while adhering to global environmental and social standards.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources and Dams Development, Akilu Musa Kuta accompanied the delegation to the Secretary to the Government of Niger State.
