The Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has commended the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for planned 200 housing units in Kebbi State.

The governor gave the commendation when the NEMA Director General, Hajiya Zubaida Umar paid a courtesy visit on him in Government House, Birnin Kebbi on Friday.

The DG’s visit was for the official handover and flags-off of distribution of emergency relief items to Kebbi State Government for persons affected by recent rainstorm/windstorm and flood disasters in several Local Government Areas of the state.

Appreciating the DG for the gesture, the governor said: “Kebbi State is not unaware of what NEMA is doing, therefore, we thank the Managing Director for being alive to her responsibility.

“This is not because she is from Kebbi State but NEMA is proactive in discharging its responsibilities. You have made us proud, please keep it up.”

The governor recalled that last year, Kebbi State had experienced series of natural disasters including; windstorm, rainstorm, flood, bridge collapse among others.

He noted that the state government had established a committee with a view to mitigating the scourge of flood, adding that the committee was saddled with the mandate of creating awareness especially among residents of flood prone areas.

The committee according to him, is discharging its responsibilities, including creating awareness on ways to curb the effects of flood as well as rendering advice to those living in flood prone areas to relocate to highland for their own safety and the safety of all.

Earlier, the NEMA director general told the governor that the agency had concluded plan to construct 200 housing units in Kebbi State for people affected by disasters.

She said: “As we all know, Kebbi State has faced serious challenges over the years, ranging from banditry to natural disasters, such as flood, windstorm, rainstorm and so on.

“Despite these trials, the resilience and resolve of its people remained a beacon of hope.

“The recent devastating rainstorm/windstorm and flood disasters in Shanga, Suru, Bunza, Danko-Wasagu, Koko-Bese and Augie Local Government Areas of Kebbi State brought new challenges, displacing thousands of families, disrupting livelihoods, and increasing the vulnerabilities of already fragile communities.”

Umar noted that today’s handover and flag-off distribution of relief materials was a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Federal Government under the able leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu based on the renewed hope mantra.

She said the donated items would further complement the ongoing efforts to rebuild and rehabilitate rainstorm/windstorm and flood-affected communities in Kebbi State.

“I must commend the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, His Excellency, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris and his team for their proactive and unwavering efforts in managing disasters and supporting the people of the State.

“NEMA remains committed to working closely with your government to strengthen disaster management and resilience-building the state.

“As we handover these relief items today, let us remember that our collective efforts are not just about responding to disasters but also building a safer, more resilient future for all Nigerians.

“Together, we will rise above these challenges and secure a brighter tomorrow for Kebbi State and our nation,” the DG said.
