President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on the occasion of his 84th birthday.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President rejoiced with the family, friends, and associates of the elder statesman, noting that his eight years of leadership left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development.
President Tinubu highlighted General Babangida’s distinguished military career, including his service as an instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Commander of the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps, and later Chief of Army Staff, before becoming Head of State.
The President recalled that Babangida’s administration will be remembered for its heavy investment in infrastructure, notably the iconic Third Mainland Bridge, as well as economic reforms that liberalised the Nigerian economy.
He also acknowledged the former leader’s role in establishing key national institutions such as the State Security Service (SSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), among others.
According to the President, Babangida’s tenure also saw the creation of states and the historic relocation of Nigeria’s Federal Capital from Lagos to Abuja.
While appreciating his sacrifice and contributions to nation-building, President Tinubu prayed to Almighty Allah to bless General Babangida with many more years in good health and renewed strength.
