The Niger State Commissioner of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Ahmed Baba Suleiman Yumu has assured that his ministry will be highly committed to providing Basic Amenities and foodstuffs to Internally Displaced Persons in Shiroro Local Government Area.
The Commissioner made this known during the Shiroro Local Government Area critical stakeholders meeting in his office aimed at identifying the immediate, midterm and longterm needs of the internally displaced persons in the area.
The Commissioner commiserating with the people in Shiroro Local Area over the bandit attack in Bassa and surrounding villages, assured the stakeholders that Governor Umar Mohammed Bago is commited to ending the insecurity in the Area, promising to provide relief to cushion the effect of the losses.
He urged the stakeholders to consider the State government and the ministry as partner in ending the menace in the local government area and ensure that palliatives meant for the IDP’s get to them in time.
Speaking during the needs assessment meeting, the permanent Secretary of the ministry Barrister Mairo Mohammed Mann stated that the ministry is deeply concerned and worried about the unfortunate attacks in the communities, promising that as ministry with the mandate of alleviating hardship, it will do everything to ensure that the people received all the attention and care required,
She called on the stakeholders to be open minded and proffer meaningful suggestions at all times on how to tackle the situation.
The Council Chairman of the local government Halilu Isyaku Kuta stressed on the need to take the war to the bandit’s den since their locations are known.
He said there several reports indicating that most of them are around kwaki, Gusoro, Kushaka, Alawa, Bassa, and Sarkin Pawa axis, saying doing that will proffer permanent solution to the incessant killing a and displacement in Shiroro Communities.
The chairman appreciated the efforts made by the administration of Governor Umar Mohammed Bago in providing security and donation of food items to the displaced persons in his assumption of office.
The Hakimin Alawa Ibrahim Salihu stated that all the village heads and people in the twenty three communities under his district are completely displaced to Kujama in Kaduna state and some to Kuta headquarters of Shiroro.
He further confirmed that over thirty five houses were burnt in Alawa while Bassa community is completely razed down with many people abducted and properties worth millions of nairas destroyed.
The critical stakeholders appealed for more security presence, provide ammunitions, motorcycles and other logistics for local vigilante around Bassa – Kukoki, kurebe, Galkogo, kusasu and other surrounding villages
On the whole, the needs assessment meeting arrived on the need to provide permanent super IDP camps, appointment of desk officers in all IDP camps in the area, sustained interface and proper monitoring on the distribution of palliatives among many others.
