The Kebbi State Local Government Service Commission has commenced training for Directors of LGs on the role of public sector in achieving sustainable development at the grassroots.
Flagging-off the training workshop in Sokoto on Wednesday, the Executive Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Alhaji Muhammad Ashiru-Garba, said the essence was to step-down development down to the grassroots.
The training with the theme: “Public Sector and Sustainable Development” is meant to facilitate the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially at the grassroots levels.
The executive chairman added that the theme of the workshop was characterised by efficiency in resource utilisation and effectiveness in service delivery and sustainability.
“The theme, being a global best practice under SDGs is aimed at rethinking development strategies, that seek to offset the increasing concentration of poverty in Africa, marked by non income derivation, such as quality access to basic health service, education and infrastructure.
“Nigeria is also making a significant efforts in achieving the target goals.
“Here in Kebbi, the administration of His Excellency, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu has demonstrated the willingness to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) plan objectives.
“This is glaring through investing huge resources into people oriented projects such as; agriculture, education, health, social welfare and inclusiveness and providing basic infrastructural facilities to rural populace,” he said.
Ashiru-Garba observed that the fact that the public sector was at the central point in facilitating the programme, the commission found it imperative to complement the efforts of the state government.
“Hence organising this training workshop for Directors of Local Government on the role of public sector for sustainable development down to grassroots levels.
“This, when achieved, will certainly better the lives of our people and eradicate abject poverty and increase wealth and security to the populace.
“This will equally reflect the vision and mission of Dr Nasir Idris administration’s cardinal objectives of running a people oriented government,” he noted.
The executive chairman urged the participants to avail themselves of the knowledge to professionally discharge their schedules at their respective local government areas.
He pointed out that the state government was spending huge financial resources on training and retraining to ensure the sustainability of professionalised manpower in the local government service.
Ashiru-Garba assured that the commission would not condone any act of absenteeism on the part of participants.
“We therefore, enjoy all of you to be more attentive and concentrate to grab the knowledge and skills from these experienced resource persons.
“To this end, the commission will follow-up with a periodic monitoring and supervision with a view to ensuring that knowledge acquired is practically translated into your various schedules of duty,” he noted.
