In a strategic step towards promoting environmental sustainability, Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna, has officially handed over one hectare of land to the Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) for the establishment of a tree nursery.

Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna, Rabiu Abubakar Gimba said the initiative marks the beginning of a collaborative afforestation project aimed at combating deforestation and mitigating the effects of climate change, particularly in hydroelectric power producing communities across Niger State.
During the formal handover ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of Abdulkadir Kure University, Professor Mohammed Aliyu Paiko, reiterated the institution’s commitment to environmental protection.
He described the partnership with HYPPADEC as a vital step in addressing the ecological challenges facing communities in the region.
The one-hectare land is strategically located within the university premises, directly behind the institution’s flagship Soilless Farming Initiative and adjacent to the proposed university forest project.
The location, according to the Vice Chancellor, was deliberately chosen to ensure synergy between ongoing agricultural innovations and environmental conservation efforts.
Speaking on behalf of HYPPADEC, the Niger State Coordinator N-HYPPADEC, Umar Isah Alhaji, lauded the university’s support and noted that the nursery will serve as a critical facility for raising assorted tree seedlings.
Also, Aminu Galadima, Head of HYPPADEC’s Forestry and Conservation Unit, highlighted the broader socio-economic and ecological benefits of the project.
He emphasized its role in restoring degraded landscapes while offering educational and economic opportunities to students and surrounding communities.
Both parties expressed optimism about the long term impact of the initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration in tackling environmental issues.
