As the sun rises on July 1, 2025, Niger State and indeed Nigeria celebrate a distinguished public servant, a seasoned administrator, and a pillar of governance Alhaji Abubakar Usman, the Secretary to the Government of Niger State (SSG).
On this special occasion of his birthday, we reflect on his remarkable journey, his unwavering dedication to public service and his transformative impact on Niger State under the leadership of Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
Appointed as the SSG on June 2, 2023, Alhaji Abubakar Usman brought with him a wealth of experience in public administration and policy implementation, His appointment was a strategic move by Governor Bago to strengthen the state’s executive council and since then, he has been instrumental in driving key Government initiatives, fostering inter-agency collaboration and ensuring seamless governance.
Under his stewardship, the Niger State Government has prioritized citizens’ engagement a platform designed for robust public interaction and feedback on Government policies . This initiative underscores his belief in inclusive governance, where the voices of the people shape developmental agendas.
Alhaji Abubakar Usman’s leadership has been pivotal in coordinating State responses to critical challenges, including the 2025 Mokwa flood disaster, where he played a key role in mobilizing relief efforts alongside the Body of Bank CEOs to provide essential aid to affected communities . His hands-on approach in crisis management has reinforced public confidence in the administration’s responsiveness.
Additionally, he has been a strong advocate for partnerships with international organizations, such as the World Bank, to drive economic diversification and women’s empowerment Programmes in Niger State.
Beyond governance, Alhaji Abubakar Usman is a unifying figure who promotes interfaith harmony. During the Islamic New Year (Hijrah 1447 AH), he reiterated the importance of spiritual reflection and communal peace, aligning with Governor Bago’s vision for a cohesive society. His leadership style rooted in tolerance, humility, and service has endeared him to both civil servants and the general populace.
