Niger State Governor, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, has inaugurated a 16-man State Standing Committee for Shura; a consultation Council in Islam.
Governor Umaru Bago has inaugurated the Committee at the Council Chamber of Government House, Minna.
He said the members of the Committee were selected based on their track records and the significant roles they are playing in the society, especially as it affects Islam.
The Governor enjoined them to justify the confidence reposed on them by working to ensure that the terms of Reference of the committee are realized.
The committee’s terms of reference include to use scholarship, experience, and wisdom in serving as a reliable Islamic religious advisory body for the Governor in particular, and the Niger State Government as a whole, on matters that are purely Islamic.
The Committee is also to ensure compassion and good governance through mutual consultations, popular consent, and collective deliberation for shared responsibility, personal freedom, justice, equality, and dignity of Nigerlites.
It is also expected to advise the Governor or Government accordingly, but not to select, elect or supervise him, his government, and or otherwise and as well make reference to the causes of intra and interreligious conflict as may be referred to it by the Bureau for Religious Affairs, thereby providing reliable solutions through recommendations, for a lasting peace in Niger State.
The Committee will also act on any directive of the Governor either directly from Government House or indirectly through the Bureau for Religious Affairs and to abstain from any act that will tarnish the personal image of member, that of the Governor, the Niger State Government, and Nigerlites.
Members are equally to act with the fear of Allah and engage in prayers and supplications on the assignment, and other religious obligations.
The 16-man State Standing Committee for Shura is to be headed by Chief Imam, Bida & Chairman, Niger State Imams Forum, Sheikh Alh. Adamu Yakatun, while the Director-General, Niger State Bureau of Religious Affairs, Dr. Umar Farooq Abdullahi, will serve as Secretary.
Members of the committee are Sheikh Muhammad Ilyasu Abdulmalik, Chief Imam of Kontagora, Mal. Muhammad Shehu, Chief Imam, Borgu, Sheikh Muhammad Kudu, Chief Imam, Agaie Mal. Ridwan Nasir, Chief Imam, Suleja, Mal. Hassan Baba, Chief Imam, Lapai, Mal. Isah Jibrin Imam, Chief Imam, Minna, Mal. Umar Aliyu, Chief Imam, Kagara,
Others are Dr. Sulaiman Salahuddeen Omotosho representative of CMS, Mal. Muhammad Usman representative of Imams Forum, Mal. Aliyu Adarawa, representative of JIBWIS Kaduna, Mal. Abubakar Abu Sumayya, representative of JIBWIS Jos, Sheikh Muhammad Isah Kutigi, representative of Tijjaniyya, Aisha Abdulkareem Sambo, and Hajiya Kulu Abdullahi representative of FOMWAN.
