General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Nigeria’s only Military President, is set to release his highly anticipated memoir on February 20, 2025. As critics and columnists attempt to vilify him over the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election, it’s essential to remember that his memoir promises to offer a nuanced perspective on his service to the nation and his vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria.

Titled “A Journey in Service,” the memoir is expected to delve into the intricacies of his eight-year administration, including the controversies and upheavals that defined his tenure. As someone who has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity, General Babangida’s memoir is likely to provide valuable insights into his decision-making process and the challenges he faced during his presidency.

It’s worth noting that General Babangida has consistently emphasized the importance of supporting leaders who mean well for the country. During a visit by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014, he remarked, “The President means well for the country. Anybody who means well for this country should support the President to make sure Nigeria Survives as a United Country.”

General Babangida’s philosophy on a united Nigeria is rooted in his experiences during the civil war, where he sacrificed his comfort to fight for the country’s unity. His courageous actions in February 1976, which disarmed the leader of the renegades Colonel Dimka and his cohort, are a testament to his commitment to Nigeria’s stability.

As we await the release of his memoir, it’s essential to approach the narrative with an open mind, recognizing that history is complex and multifaceted. As General Babangida once said, “History will never forgive you for not taking a decision. But rather, history will forgive you for taking a decision, even if it’s the wrong one.”

The political landscape in Nigeria is heating up, and the recent visits by organizations and politicians to Hilltop, the residence of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, are a testament to this. It’s clear that these individuals are embarking on a political pilgrimage, seeking the blessings and endorsement of the former Head of State as they gear up for the 2027 General elections.

As the build-up to the elections intensifies, it’s becoming increasingly evident that General Babangida’s influence and stature in Nigerian politics remain unparalleled. His residence, Hilltop, has become a mecca of sorts, attracting politicians and power brokers who seek to tap into his wealth of experience and insight.

The visits to Hilltop are not merely courtesy calls; they are strategic moves aimed at securing General Babangida’s support and endorsement. In Nigerian politics, the backing of a respected elder statesman like General Babangida can make all the difference in a candidate’s fortunes.

As one observer aptly put it, “THE ROAD TO ASO ROCK MUST PASS THROUGH MINNA.” This phrase has become a rallying cry, underscoring the importance of General Babangida’s endorsement in the quest for the nation’s highest office.

With General Babangida’s memoir set to be released on February 20, 2025, the stakes are even higher. The memoir promises to offer a unique perspective on his years in power, and its release is likely to generate even more interest in his views on the future of Nigerian politics.

As the country hurtles towards the 2027 General elections, one thing is clear: General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida remains a force to be reckoned with in Nigerian politics.

The launch of General Babangida’s memoir promises to be a significant event, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and other dignitaries expected to attend. As we reflect on General Babangida’s legacy, it’s clear that his memoir will offer a unique perspective on Nigeria’s history and provide valuable lessons for future generations.
