National Hydro Electric Power Areas Development Commission N-HYPPADEC says it is ready to construct a new retaining wall for Muye and adjourning communities in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State to address the effect of persistent flooding affecting the communities.
Managing Director of the Commission Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa who made this known during an inspection tour to the affected community, identified engineering failure as the cause of the collapsed of the initial retaining wall constructed to prevent the gulley erosion.
Represented by Director Operation of the Commission Engineer Ilyasu Abdullahi Wara, the managing Director explained that providing succor to people in communities ravaged by devastating effect of flooding is their core mandate.
He said persistent flooding and other forms of environmental degradation are making life unbearable for the inhabitants of hydropower producing states.
Members representing Agaie, Lapai federal constituency at the National and Chairman House Committee on Army Abdullahi Mahmudu said the collapse of the retaining wall in Muye Community has affected and exposed about thirty eight communities to decades of annual flooding and crippling socio-economic activities, destroyed farm lands and houses of the people who are predominantly farmers and fishermen.
According to him several attempt by the federal Government to provide a lasting solution by constructing a retaining wall that will stand the taste of time prove abortive.
The Sarkin Arewa of Muye Mahmud Ndaji Muhammad and a resident of the community Ibrahim Abdullahi Ilyasu said the communities have faced a lot of night mare due to the collapse of the wall, appealing to N-HYPPADEC to assist them with the construction of a new one in order to end the suffering of the masses.
