Niger Foods and Logistics Company Ltd has partnered with the Niger State Ministry of Education and School Reform to expand the state’s pilot School Farm Garden Initiative, aimed at equipping students with modern farming skills and promoting self-reliance.
Director-General of Educational and School Reform, Hajiya Maimuna Mohammed, said the programme—currently running in five selected schools in Minna—is part of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago’s vision to embed entrepreneurship into the school curriculum.
She explained that the scheme responds to systemic gaps in the education sector while aligning with global trends in modern agricultural technology.
According to her, schools were selected based on available land space and security, with Maryam Babangida Science College, Government Girls Secondary School Minna, a nomadic school, and some smart schools forming the first phase.
The State Liaison Officer for Niger Foods, Joyce Jiya, revealed that the company is supporting the participating schools—particularly boarding institutions—with farming inputs including seedlings, tractors, and herbicides.
She noted that students at Maryam Babangida Science College and Government Girls Secondary School are cultivating over 10 hectares of farmland to produce food for their own consumption.
The initiative is expected to both improve food sustainability in schools and give students hands-on entrepreneurial experience.
