The Niger State Government has called on the Federal Government to address the poor state of federal roads within the state, which have become a significant burden on the administration of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago.
Speaking during an exclusive interview in Minna, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Digital Media and Strategy, Abdulbaqy Usman Ebbo, highlighted the pressing need for federal intervention. He noted that Governor Bago is overwhelmed with ongoing state projects and cannot tackle all challenges alone.
Citing specific examples, Usman Ebbo mentioned critical federal road projects like the Suleja-Minna road, awarded over fourteen years ago, the Kontagora-Rijau road, awarded more than a decade ago, and the Baro road project, all of which remain incomplete despite numerous assurances.
Ebbo lamented the state government’s struggle to manage resources while prioritizing essential sectors such as health, education, and agriculture. He urged the Federal Government to recognize Niger State as a strategic location vital to the nation’s economy and ensure the completion of these road projects.
“Niger State is the center of Nigeria. If our roads were to close, the country’s economy would be at risk,” Usman Ebbo stressed, emphasizing the urgent need for increased federal presence to alleviate the people’s suffering.
He also expressed disappointment over the underutilization of the state’s vast opportunities and called on the Federal Government to support Governor Bago’s efforts, particularly in leading the nation’s agricultural revolution.
Furthermore, the Special Adviser urged members of the state and national assemblies to amplify Niger State’s plight and draw federal attention. He noted that Governor Bago has laid the groundwork to facilitate the Federal Government’s policies and programs in the state.
“The Federal Government must act swiftly to complement the governor’s efforts and address the infrastructural challenges in Niger State,” he concluded.
