The Niger State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has issued a public warning following a flood alert released by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), indicating that parts of the state are at high risk of flooding between 22nd July and 5th August 2025.
In an official statement signed by Dr. Abubakar Sadiq Musa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, the Honourable Commissioner, Alhaji Yakubu Muhammad Kolo, called for heightened vigilance across the affected areas. The statement attributes the anticipated flooding to the rising water levels in major rivers including the Niger, Kaduna, Gurara, and Kojinmarinjo.
The high-risk Local Government Areas identified include Agaie, Bida, Borgu, Bosso, Edati, Gbako, Katcha, Lapai, Lavun, Magama, Mashegu, Mokwa, Rafi, Shiroro, and Wushishi.
Additionally, several major roads may be impacted by the flooding. These include the Awuru–Emigi–Falla Road, Federal Road F. Owo–Tegina, Mokwa–Gana Road, Owo–Tegina Road, Wawa–Yelwa Road, and Kainji Road.
In response to the alert, the Ministry has issued the following directives: all emergency response agencies should be on standby and ready for immediate action; communities in the affected LGAs are advised to develop and implement evacuation plans; and residents are urged to remain alert, follow updates through verified government channels, and respond swiftly to any official instructions.
“This call to action is necessary to minimize the risk to lives and property. The government remains committed to the safety of its citizens and calls for the cooperation of all stakeholders,” the statement reads.
The Ministry urged the public to share verified information and refrain from spreading panic, while also advising local authorities and traditional leaders to help mobilize their communities for proactive flood response measures.
