The Niger State Government has formally inaugurated a three-member investigative panel to probe allegations of misconduct against the suspended Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Council.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Bologi Ibrahim, the decision was taken in strict compliance with the provisions of Section 31(3) of the Niger State Local Government Law 2001 (as amended), which outlines the procedure for investigating council chairmen accused of wrongdoing.
The panel is chaired by Justice Abdullahi Mikhail of the State High Court, with Barrister Bala Marika and Alhaji Abubakar Salisu as members, while Barrister Ibrahim Mohammed Babangida will serve as the Secretary.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, while inaugurating the panel, explained that the move was essential to ensure the matter is handled within the framework of the law. He charged the members to carry out their work diligently, uphold fairness and justice, and maintain transparency throughout the process.
The Governor also assured the panel of the state government’s full support to enable them to discharge their mandate effectively.
Earlier, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Nasiru Mu’azu, noted that the panel’s establishment was not only a constitutional requirement but also a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to due process and good governance.
The panel’s terms of reference include investigating all allegations levelled against the suspended chairman, gathering and examining relevant evidence, and obtaining witness testimonies under oath or declaration.
The panel also has the authority to summon individuals and request necessary documents that could aid its investigation.
Governor Bago reiterated that the outcome of the panel’s work would be based solely on facts and evidence, adding that the process reflects his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct in public office.
