The Nigerian Navy has announced plans to establish a naval base in Yauri, Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, as part of efforts to strengthen security along the River Niger and the nation’s inland waterways.
A delegation from the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to Governor Nasir Idris at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.
Speaking during the visit, Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, who led the delegation, said the new base would enhance the Navy’s maritime strategy by extending its presence to the hinterland.
“River Niger is a great national asset that supports agriculture, power generation, and the livelihood of many Nigerians. Unfortunately, it has also become a route for smuggling arms and a hideout for criminal elements. Establishing a base in Kebbi will allow us to fully secure this stretch of the river,” he said.
Rear Admiral Nwatu noted that the move complements the existing naval base in Niger State and will boost security in the Northwest.
Governor Idris lauded the initiative, describing it as a holistic step toward addressing the security challenges in the southern part of Kebbi. He assured the Navy of the state government’s full support, including providing temporary accommodation for its personnel while a permanent structure is developed.
“Kebbi is very strategic because we share borders with Niger and Benin Republics. With the incursion of bandits and other security threats, the presence of the Navy will greatly strengthen our security architecture,” the governor said.
The governor also expressed gratitude to the Chief of Naval Staff for considering Kebbi for the establishment of the base, emphasizing that the gesture would enhance the safety and well-being of the people of the state.
