Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ Niger State Council Comrade Abu Nmodu has expressed concern over poor access to people in positions of authority in sourcing for information of events.
Comrade Abu Nmodu made his feelings known when he paid a congratulatory visit to the new General Manager of Radio Niger Malam Mohammed Kolo, in his office.
The State Chairman of NUJ who cited officials of government with such habits said the present administration was doing alot to develop the state but lack of access by officials was hindering effective dissemination of information about the achievements.
He therefore implored government functionaries to see journalists as partners in progress and adopt a well coordinated access to them to enable newsmen build their image efficiently.
Comrade Abu Nmodu who disclosed that, the Union has put in place internal mechanism to check quackery, lamented that patronage by people in positions of authority encourages some individuals to engage in quack journalism.
He urged members of the public to report any one caught in quakery to the union for necessary action.
The State Chairman of NUJ then assured the new General Manager of Radio Niger of the Union,s support and cooperation to enable him succeed.
Responding, the new General Manager of Radio Niger Malam Mohammed Kolo, appreciated NUJ delegation for the visit.
Malam Mohammed Kolo challenged NUJ to curb quakery in the profession as many people were today claiming to be journalists.
He emphasized the need for government to involve NUJ and RATTAWU while recruiting those to work in media houses to guarantee professionalism.
