Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has declared that the state remains the only one in Nigeria offering free education and full scholarships to students studying within and outside the country.
This was contained in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris, on Thursday, following a courtesy visit by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Students’ Matters, Mr. Asefor Sunday Dare, to Government House, Birnin Kebbi. He was accompanied by the National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Mr. Olusola Oladejo, for the inauguration of the newly elected Kebbi State Students’ Association executives.
The statement revealed that Governor Idris had recently paid ₦2.7 billion to settle the tuition fees of Kebbi students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria and abroad.
It added that the state government also increased boarding students’ feeding allowance from ₦150 million to ₦300 million, lifted the embargo on employment to engage 5,000 new teachers, rehabilitated 2,004 schools, and constructed over 340 new ones to improve learning standards.
On infrastructure, the statement noted that the governor commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the state with major road projects, including the 1,008-kilometre Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, with 280 kilometres passing through Kebbi. It further revealed that the 87-kilometre Koko-Zuru road contract was revoked to allow the state to complete the project quickly, with reimbursement expected later.
The statement also highlighted the governor’s commendation of President Tinubu’s students’ loan scheme, describing it as a historic move aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda being domesticated in Kebbi State.
